Today is Janmashtami, also known as Krishnashtami or Gokulashtami, a festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna all over India. This festival is celebrated with great devotion, gaiety, and enthusiasm and it generally comes in the month of July or August. The actual celebration of Janmashtami takes place during the midnight as Krishna is believed to be born on a dark, stormy and windy night to end the rule and violence of his uncle, Kansa.
When it comes to Indian mythology and culture, there is no better source than Amar Chitra Katha to refer to. Be it stories about Gods/Goddesses or inspirational leaders, folk tales to epics, there is something for almost every occasion that Amar Chitra Katha has to offer to young readers.
So when I was looking for a book on Krishna for my 7-year-old, my default search was to find some title by Amar Chitra Katha and as expected I found many gems with them on legends of Krishna. You may find all Krishna titles here but the one that I thought was really good for young readers who are just starting on stories about Krishna and Mahabharata would be Krishna – Protector of Dharma by Anant Pai.
Packed with 5 stories, this book is insightful and interesting in multiple ways – on one hand, it has cute anecdotes about Krishna’s childhood and on the other, it shows his powerful side with fights against strong demons like Narkasura. My boy who loves action and adventure any day, of course, loved the fights and action scenes more :-).
Do give this book a try, like many ACK books, it will be surely worth your time and money.
Wish you all a very happy Janmashtami. May your life be always filled with love and happiness.
