When We Were Alone

When We Were Alone

The very first thing one can notice in this book is the illustrations. We must say the illustrations by Julie Flett are just gorgeous. The story begins with a young girl helping out her grandmother in her garden and she begins to notice certain things which make her curious. Why does her grandmother have long braided hair and beautifully colored clothing?

Why does she speak another language and spend so much time with her family? When she asks her grandmother about these things, she will tell her about how life in a residential school will be in which all of these things were taken away. When We Were Alone is a story about a difficult time in history and, ultimately, one of empowerment and strength.
